Velvet Revolver – Contraband
|
After two solid listenings I have to say that I agree with what most other *actually respected* critics are saying; Nothing that stands out very much, but a good solid rock album nonetheless. Believe it or not, this is a step in the right direction. Just think, musical innovation led to the death of rock. It makes perfect sense, if all the bands keep trying to change their sound in order to be branded with the god-like label of ‘innovative,’ then the original sound ceases to exist. So what we really need in this nu-metal rock culture are more non-innovative hard rock groups. Okay, now I feel a little better. --A little-- By the way, on my TV right now is Norm McDonald playing the Grim Reaper on Family Guy. Best. Cartoon. Ever. *It started production on a new season coming out next summer.* After I played the album at work the first thing a coworker said was: “I want more Slash!” He liked Slash’s usual crafty finger work but thought there was not enough of it, but I think the balance is good. I read (I think in Rolling Stone) that they didn’t want to sound too much like GnR or STP so having less solo guitar than chord riffing fits the bill. “Sucker Train Blues” has a great solo AND Weiland’s signature thickly harmonized chorus, which has caused it to be my favorite for now. Another standout track is “Big Machine” which has a bloodygood bass line and a satisfying rock swagger. This album covers all the needed bases. It rocks hard, rocks soft, and rocks in between hard and soft. We’ll call that area…sard…or hoft. Of all the tracks, “Slither” really reminds me of STP which certainly isn’t a bad thing. The benchmark of good music is that it can’t just be listened to, but felt. Every time I hear Slither break into its sweet riff, I most definitely can feel the groove. (Yes, shut up, I know I’m a dork). The best rock guitar holds up when played acoustically and “Slither” sure as hell lives up to that, thanks to a track I attained from a certain non-sucky web site. As previously stated, an overall kick-ass hard rock LP, definitely worth it to any self-respecting music lover. (Good Charlotte fans need not apply). I'm Dustin Meehan Please argue with me. Coming next week…the shit I had to go through to get those songs on my computer and why those responsible are welcome to die at the receiving end of my NRA signature sawed off shotgun. |
