Velvet Revolver - Contraband
Part Two - Copyright protect THIS!

So I'm just happy as a fucking clam. I've finally gotten the cd that I've been waiting for for a very long time. It has the lead singer of my favorite band and the other bandmates that didn't suck before either. I'm diggin it in my car and can't wait to hear all of it. So I get to my room and put it in my computer, thinking that even if it's set up like most new cds I buy, I could still rip it with the right software.

If only life were so easy.

As soon as the cd loads I get a "do you agree to terms..." box that lets me choose yay or nay. From the endless years of training, I first check to make sure that there are no boxes checked that lets them sell my information then automatically click no. After clicking no it automatically ejected the cd.

Just fuckin' GREAT.

I tried several times in futility but I eventually had to click the dreaded "YES, I Agree." So I went ahead and ripped the cd anyway. When it was done I eagerly listened to it hoping to hear the latter songs that I hadn't even previewed yet. Instead, what I got was a jumbled, skipping overall shitty sounding mess. Appeanantly, when I "agreed" to the terms of that cd, it installed some small program in the background that would screw up the information if I tried to rip it.

Just fuckin' FABULOUSE.

So I was forced to use this big brother program. I wondered if they were sending information to the FBI headquarters where they were planning on executing the biggest internet music sting ever. (Sleep well, my internet minions). So I went to work the next day irritated and depressed, whining to my coworkers about it and then one of them decided to actually help me (though I believe he may have also wanted this cd). He took it home and did his stuff. Here are his instructions:

"When you put the cd into a computer it loads a program which plays wma files that are on the disc, and ignores the actual cd tracks. What you want to do is turn off auto insert notification for your cdrom which you can do with tweak ui (just do a google search for 'xp tweak ui' it'll be on microsoft.com somewhere) be sure to use the xp version because the windows 98/95 version is different. Somewhere in there you can disable the autorun for select drive letters. Then when you put the cd in that program won't load. Then just load up your favorite cd ripper program and rip it like any other, ignoring the data track (which is where the wma files are)."

So there you have it. All of the crap I had to go through in order to get the information that I LEGALLY BOUGHT onto my computer. From what I understand with mp3 laws, you have to buy the stuff you downloaded within 24 hours or you have to erase it. Doesn't that mean that if I already went out and bought the bloody album the day it came out, I have the legal right to have it on my computer? Any lawers read this site? (God I hope not).

Use this information! Help distribute this kick-ass rock-n-roll! I call upon you, my brothers to spread the love. Also keep in mind that I don't blame Velvet Revolver, I think they know they have all the money they need for now. (Or maybe it would be better if Weiland couldn't afford the heroin).

Fight the machine!
