Why Velvet Revolver Will Never Be the Stone Temple Pilots

Axl Rose is a whiny little bitch.

The other band members were smart, if GnR were still alive today, they all would have killed themselves or each other and Axl would sing about his own life standing on the pile of their corpses. For music as well as life in general, moving on is important, it lets wounds heal and it provides for eventual happiness. STP knew to stop things down so they wouldn't have to go through an MTV news break-up-a-thon. They released a 'Thank You' album for their fans and parted ways for now, always with the possibility of coming back when time has helped. A certain other band couldn't do that, only the name exists now, and not an album thanking fans, but one that is tortuously dangled in front of their foaming faces for an obscene amount of time. Perhaps they could get back together, but not anytime soon if they know what's good for them. Axl will have to grow up and let his balls drop first.

Scott Weiland is one of the best lyricists out there. He often writes from his heart about situations or feelings, but does them in an abstract way that lets the listener use them for his or her own purposes (STP song:' Trippin' on a Hole in a Paper Heart' was written when he found out that he was at the top of everyone's celebrity death list). OF COURSE he repeats verses just as everyone to ever write more than two songs has done. What is even more unique about him is that even as the singer, not even playing an instrument usually, he still knows how to let the music speak for itself (STP song: 'Down' the there is one repeated verse of 8 short lines and two repeated lines for the chorus but it is an incredibly emotional song and it rocks fucking hard).

If Axl is a whiny little bitch then he also has a voice to match it. UGH. I do love a lot of the music, but I can only take so much of it before I need either silence or something a little more pleasing to the ears... like stabbing them with a dull pencil. Weiland is recognized as one of the better vocalists in the industry and has worked with many artists to help out their own abilities as well as improving vocal harmonies. Weiland is the only reason that Fred Durst could even vomit a single note out from the second Limp Bizkit album to the current. In fact limp bizkit thanks Weiland on their second album in the song 'Show Me What You Got' "Scott Weiland, the melody man, if you can't sing it, nobody can." Not only can Weiland sing in a few more octaves than most singers out there, but most of those octaves are also not sung through his nasal passage.

The Stone Temple Pilots were and may be again a force to be reckoned with. Throughout their six albums that have steadily and consistently put out good songs. They are a band that never lost that delicious garage feel that can really make a song something more than it would have been. VR will never attain the level of STP or GnR. Something comprised of two entities such as those cannot supersede them. VR just seems to be what most of the pop 'cogs' want. It's main stream rock and roll. It's definitely not bad, but it's nothing special.
